More than a neon skyline.

The chrome is easy to recognise. The interesting part is who owns it, who repairs it, and what happens when the body becomes another platform.

Follow cyberpunk across media without flattening every rain-soaked city into the same aesthetic. Immersive sims, hardboiled prose, animation, functional clothing and machine music all approach the fault lines differently.

The guide index

Different media. Shared pressure points.

These are routes through the subject, not a ranked canon. Choose by the distinction you want to dig into: agency, embodiment, language, construction or sound.

Systems / agency / consequences

Games that make the city playable

Deus Ex, Cyberpunk 2077 and Shadowrun: Dragonfall do not offer the same kind of freedom. Separate systemic problem-solving from build expression, branching dialogue and the sheer pleasure of moving through a hostile city.

Cinema beyond the establishing shot

Blade Runner is not interchangeable with Ghost in the Shell, and Akira has its own political temperature. Read the spaces between surveillance, artificial memory and the body refusing containment.

Books with different kinds of bite

Neuromancer compresses; Snow Crash escalates; The Memory Police removes. Trace the differences between a genre touchstone, a satirical mutation and a neighbouring work that asks a related question.

Style with something under the shell

Technical construction, industrial workwear and club styling intersect without becoming synonyms. Build around movement, weather and repairability rather than treating another hanging strap as a functional upgrade.

Sound without a single preset

Cyberpunk can sound spacious, abrasive, devotional or claustrophobic. Follow the differences between screen scores, EBM, industrial music and synthwave before putting them all in one playlist.

The hardware matters. So does the labour that keeps it running.

Keep the friction

Ask what the technology costs.

A fictional implant is not automatically cyberpunk. The sharper question is whether it changes a person’s leverage: access to work, control of their own body, the ability to disappear, or the price of staying connected.

That question travels well. In a game, it becomes a resource system. In a film, a cut between bodies and machinery. In prose, an assumption buried in a sentence. In clothing, it can be the gap between a technical promise and an actual pocket you can use.

Keep the genre’s arguments in view and the visual vocabulary becomes richer, not less enjoyable.
